==2023 Spring Season

MCSV closed out the year 2022 by presenting our annual holiday concert, Christmas With The Master Chorale, on Sunday, December 11th. Once into the year 2023 we began rehearsals for our spring concert, Hope Springs Eternal. Our March 26th concert will be filled with music that spans three centuries and several different languages as it reaches into the depth of the human spirit. We will be accompanied by a full string orchestra. Here is what you can expect….
1865 - Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Faure
This hymn was written when the composer was 19 years old and a student of church music in Paris. The religious text comes from Jean Racine, a 17th century French dramatist. The music is filled with complex harmonies and choral techniques that emphasize the yearning prayer of the text.
1868 - How Lovely is thy Dwelling Place by Johannes Brahms
The fourth movement of the Brahms Requiem, this choral piece was first performed on Good Friday in Bremen, Germany and is the movement most often extracted for separate performance. It is a flowing, lyrical piece with text taken from Psalm 84.
1887 - Pavane, Op. 50 in F-sharp minor by Gabriel Faure
Pavane was first performed in Paris in 1888. Faure originally wrote the piece for piano in the style of a Spanish court dance called the Pavane. The words later added to the music describe the Pavane dance movements in terms of the romantic helplessness of the men in resisting the flirting dalliances of the ladies.
1890 - Requiem in D Minor by Gabriel Faure
Faure’s Requiem is believed to be a musical tribute to his father (d.1885) and mother (d. 1887). He described it as being dominated by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest. The work is in Latin and is scored for two soloists, chorus and orchestra. Faure’s use of harmony and lyrical melodies give the Requiem a transcendent beauty.
1991 - Sing Me to Heaven by Daniel Gawthrop
Gawthrop started out to set a text to music in a piece that “describes what we, as singers, feel about music in our lives”. He ended up creating an anthem in which the text and the music combine to create an effect more powerful than either could achieve alone. This piece is one of the most performed and recorded choral works in modern history. Gawthrop is an American composer, conductor and organist who currently resides in Idaho.
1993 - Dirait-on by Morten Lauridsen
Dirait-on is the final of five vocal pieces from Les Chansons des Roses set to the French poems of Rainer Maria Rilke. It is a songful setting of a text that contrasts the tenderness of a wild rose with the self-love of a narcissus flower. The rose ignores its surroundings and caresses its inner core while the narcissus reaches out like Narcissus looking to admire his own reflection in the water. Or, so it might be said. Lauridsen is a Distinguished Professor of Composition at USC’s Thornton School of Music.
2005 - Soneto de la Noche by Morten Lauridsen
Soneto de la Noche is the second in a set of four vocal Nocturnes (music inspired by night) written by Lauidsen for the American Choral Director’s Association. The Spanish text of Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, speaks of an eternal love that transcends death. The music is serene, with long, lyrical vocal lines.
2006 - Omnia Sol by Z. Randall Stroope
The text of this piece is a mixture of Latin and English. The message conveyed is that we leave a bit of ourselves in every soul we encounter. We are never alone and part of us remains in the hearts and minds of those we chance to meet. An American composer and choral conductor, Stroope has received many commissions and awards.
